Citizens for the Second Amendment
(Information about Northwest militia-type groups)
By Todd Mordhorst
University of Idaho journalism student

Location: In and around Stevens County, Washington.

Primary Beliefs: Emphasis on the right to bear arms, downsizing government, and dislike of Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms. Many have great fear of United Nations and New World Order conspiracy theories are prevalent.

Activities: An event in April of 1992 sparked citizens in the area to organize. Twenty federal agents and sheriff's deputies looking for machine guns surrounded a house on Peterson Swamp Road north of Colville. And they found no illegal weapons whatsoever. Members of Citizens for the Second Amendment write letters to state legislature, stage rallies and parades, and are very involved in local government.

The group has enough clout that they were able to elect J.D. Anderson as a county commissioner. He is, "an outspoken constitutionalist who believes militias are critical to America's future and that federal officials have no jurisdiction inside any state."
